What is microsuction ear wax removal?

Microsuction ear wax removal is a gentle method used to clear excess or impacted earwax and debris from the ear canal. The procedure involves using a small suction device to remove the wax under direct visual guidance through a surgical microscope. Unlike traditional ear syringing, micro-suction does not involve the use of water, making it a suitable option for people with sensitive ears, ear infections, or perforated eardrums. The process is typically quick, precise, and well-tolerated.

How often do I need to get my ears cleaned?

If you produce excess ear wax, wear hearing aids, or experience frequent blockages, having your ears cleaned 6-12 monthly may be helpful.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No, you do not need a referral from your doctor to make an appointment with us. Call us on 07 5666 5305 or make an appointment online. Same-day appointments are often available.

Should I clean my ears at home?

It is not recommended to clean your ears at home. Using tools like cotton buds can push wax deeper into the ear canal and potentially cause injury. Ear candling is also discouraged, as it is ineffective and can be harmful.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure usually takes around 15-20 minutes, however this can vary depending on the amount and type of wax you have.

Do I need to use ear drops before the appointment?

You don’t typically need to use any drops before your appointment unless recommended otherwise. If you would like to, we suggest using olive oil for 1-2 days prior.

Can you remove foreign objects?

Yes, and it’s more common than you might think. A cotton tip or earplug that’s gone a little too far, or a curious child who’s popped something small in their ear. We can safely and gently remove most objects using microsuction, with no water and no mess.

How do I know if I need ear wax removal?

Common symptoms include hearing loss, earache, a feeling of fullness or pressure, itchiness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or dizziness.

Can earwax removal help my vertigo?

Vertigo can have many different causes, including inner ear or balance-related conditions. In some cases, a build-up of earwax may contribute to dizziness or a sensation of imbalance, particularly if it’s blocking the ear canal. If wax is the contributing factor, microsuction can help relieve these symptoms by clearing the blockage. However, if vertigo continues after ear cleaning, it’s important to follow up with your GP for further assessment.

Is micro-suction suitable for people with perforated eardrums or ear infections?

Yes, micro-suction is the preferred form of ear cleaning for those with perforations and/or ear infections.

Can children have micro-suction?

Yes, however it is very important that your child is able to remain still during the procedure. Please phone us for further information.

Is there anything I should avoid after the procedure?

We advise avoiding getting water in your ears for 24–48 hours to allow the ear canal to settle. Most people can return to normal activities straight away, but if your ears feel slightly sensitive, it’s best to avoid exposure to strong wind or water until they feel back to normal.

What are the risks or side effects?

Side effects are rare but may include minor discomfort, temporary dizziness, short-term hearing sensitivity or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). These usually resolve quickly.

Can microsuction help if I wear hearing aids?

Yes. Wearing hearing aids can change the way your ears naturally clear wax, sometimes leading to build-up or feedback. Microsuction allows us to safely remove wax without moisture or pressure, ideal for those who rely on hearing aids daily.

Do you syringe ears?

No, we don’t. Due to the risks associated with ear syringing, we use microsuction under direct microscopic vision. This method allows us to safely and precisely remove wax or debris using gentle suction, fine curettes, and micro forceps, depending on what’s needed.

How much does it cost?

New patient - $125 Returning patient - $110 Pension/DVA/Health Care Concession card holder - $100 Returning patient within 6 weeks - $70 If no micro-suction is required during appointment - $50

If you cannot remove my wax, do I need to pay to come back?

No — there’s no extra charge if you need to return.

In the rare case we can’t remove all the wax during your first visit (usually when it’s very compacted), we’ll ask you to use softening drops and come back for a completion appointment to finish the procedure. This ensures your ears are fully clear and comfortable.

Can I claim a rebate through Medicare or my private health fund?

Unfortunately, no. Medicare and private health funds do not currently provide rebates for services performed by Registered Nurses. We strive to keep our fees fair and transparent so you know exactly what to expect at each visit.
